Halogen replacements

When it comes to eco-friendliness, standard halogen bulbs are better than old-fashioned incadescents but still much worse than standard eco bulbs. It doesn't help that most halogen fittings feature three or more bulbs.

Ceiling-mounted halogens (MR16)

Standard MR16 (GU5.3) bulbs have two little wires on the base (see picture) and are widely used in fittings where the housing for the bulb is mainly enclosed within a ceiling, extractor fan, etc. Our GU5.3 bulbs work exactly as normal, even with dimmer switches, but use 30% less energy to produce the same amount of light.

GU10 bulbs

GU10 bulbs connect via two little mushroom-shaped fittings (see photo). We offer two types of eco-friendly alternatives to regular GU10 halogen bulbs…

• Compact fluorescents These are regular energy-saving bulbs in a GU10 shape. They produce plenty of light while using far less energy. Note that they're not dimmable and are a little bit bigger than regular GU10 bulbs so might not fit in some tight-fitting enclosures.

Megaman 50W-equivalent spot | £8.50

Fitting: GU10 240V [more info]
Power: 11W
Typical savings: £55 & 252kg CO2

• LED bulbs are probably the eco bulbs of the future, since they can be even more efficient than compact fluorescents. Currently, however, affordable models are only available in super-low-power versions with less light output than typical bulbs. So while they're extremely efficient, they're best for mood lighting, accent lighting and night-lights for children.

Powerbeam 5W-equivalent spot | £6.50

Fitting: GU10 240V [more info]
Power: 1W
Typical savings: £21 & 100kg CO2 (compared to an admittedly much brighter 30W halogen).
Not dimmer-switch compatible
